Leonardo's study of a saw is part of an ancient tradition of working machines. The study is less an invention, but rather complements and documented the developments of his time.

The saw was operated by the energy of the water that has been converted by a complex system of gears and mechanical components into a vertical movement of the saw blade and the simultaneous movement of the car.
